1984-98 Power Wheels vehicle notification -
In June 2001, Fisher-Price (FP) agreed to pay the government $1.1 million to settle charges it failed to report serious safety defects in its "Power Wheels" ride-on toy vehicles that resulted in fires and injuries. Although FP said it only settled to end avoid business disruptions, the Consumer Product Safety Division charged that FP failed to report 116 fires involving the vehicles and more than 1,800 incidents of the vehicles' electrical components overheating, short-circuiting, melting, or failing. Nine children received minor burns, and the toys caused up to $300,000 in property damage to 22 houses and garages, the agency said. FP also knew about at least 71 incidents in which the toys failed to stop, resulting in six minor injuries when they slammed into other objects. In 1998, FP recalled 10 million Power Wheels ride-on vehicles, which were sold under nearly 100 model names. For more information about the recall, consumers can call FP at 1-800-977-7800.
